OeNB Public Lecture: Hans Gersbach on “The Future of Money”

29.05.2026

How does our monetary system function, why is it increasingly under pressure, and what possible futures are emerging? These questions were at the center of the OeNB Public Lecture “The Future of Money” held yesterday at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Statistics at the University of Vienna.

The lecture was delivered by Hans Gersbach, Professor of Macroeconomics: Innovation and Policy at ETH Zurich, Co-Director of the KOF Swiss Economic Institute, and CEPR Research Fellow. In his talk, Gersbach explored how money and monetary systems are being reshaped by technological change, geopolitical dynamics, and shifting forms of trust.

Bringing together current research and key insights from the literature, the lecture addressed the growing pressures on existing monetary structures and examined potential future developments of monetary systems. The event also highlighted the broader societal relevance of monetary policy and institutional design in times of economic and technological transformation.

The Public Lecture was part of the OeNB Visiting Professorship, a joint initiative of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank and the Faculty of Business, Economics and Statistics at the University of Vienna. Since 2016, the visiting professorship has brought internationally renowned researchers to Vienna and contributes to international academic exchange as well as public discourse on economic policy challenges.

The Faculty of Business, Economics and Statistics would like to thank Hans Gersbach for the inspiring lecture and the Oesterreichische Nationalbank for the continued support and long-standing cooperation within the framework of the visiting professorship.
