Erasmus+

Current Information!

Erasmus+ exchange places in the UK

After recent political developments, the UK is expected to leave the EU with an agreement. Legally, the UK will no longer be a member of the European Union after 31 January 2020. However, the agreement on the withdrawal provides for the UK to participate in the Erasmus+ programme in 2020 (including the 2020 round of applications) without any changes.

Student exchange 2020/21

Due to the regulations for the transitional period (currently 31.12.2020), we recommend that students start their Erasmus+ stay in the winter semester 2020/21. As matters stand at the moment (14.01.2020), financing through the Erasmus+ Programme is not guaranteed for the summer semester 2021.

In the event of an exit without an agreement on the withdrawal ("No Deal") learning mobilities implemented on the basis of special agreements may be funded up to 4 months by the University of Vienna. However, it cannot be guaranteed that all nominated students will receive funding! Details about the application process will follow

For more information about the matter, please have a look at the website of OeAD/Erasmus+ national agency (in German): bildung.erasmusplus.at/de/aktuelles/artikel/2019/09/informationen-zum-brexit-update/

Application deadlines

Please note! From the main application period 2020 onwards, application documents have to be submitted via the platform Mobility Online!

  • Second application period (left-over places) 2020: Application until 28 September 2020  (for left-over places for the summer semester 2021)
  • Main application period 2021: Application until end of February 2021 (for winter and summer semester 2021/22 as well as the whole acamedic year)
  • Applications submitted late will not be considered!

All necessary documents must be submitted correctly via Mobility Online .

It is highly appreciated if applications are handed in in the course of February or September, and not on the day of the deadline.
We do not follow a first come - first serverd procedure, so the time of submission is irrelevant for the assessment of your application.

  • The completion ot the STEOP is a mandatory prerequisit for application for students from all Bachelor programmes (BW, IBW, VWL, Statistik)!

Application procedure and necessary documents

If you would like to apply for an Erasmus+ exchange place, please proceed as follows

STEP 1: Carefully consult all available information on partner universities, available places and course recognition

You can find the necessary information on this website as well as the homepage of the central International Office of the University of Vienna.

If you have specific questions, we strongly recommend you attend the consulation hours of the International Support (especially in case of unclarities regarding the course recognition)!

STEP 2: Submission of the application documents via Mobility Online

The following documents have to uploaded before the deadline (1 PDF document per main bulletpoint)

  • Letter of motivation + CV
    • The language of these documents depends on the required language of the first preference.
    • The letter of motivation has to be at least 1 A4 page long and must contain sound academic arguments for your application.
    • You may also address your second and third preference.
    • If available, you may also include other certificates which you feel support your application (letter of reference, internship certificates, confirmations of past summer schools/language courses/charity work etc.) as well als the Buddy certificate issued by our faculty. Please attached these after your CV.
  • Current transcript of records
  • ID (passport or ID card)
  • Language requirements
    • A suitable language certificate must be submitted for each university in the list of preferences.
    • If you would like to use your attendance of a Business Communication (Wiko) class as proof of your language skills, please upload a transcript of records in which the relevant course is highlighted.
    • If you have passed the OOPT, please uploade your Result Card.
  • Correctly and completely filled in preliminary list of courses (please upload on Mobility Online under "further documents")
    • This list does not represent your final choice of classes! It is meant to show how carefully you have prepared your studies at the partner university and how well you have engaged with the course recognition procedure.

It would be highly appreciated if you would submit your application documents in the course of February/September, not on the day of the deadline.

Assessment criteria for the applications:

  • Grade point average
  • Study efficiency (ECTS per semester)
  • Work experience/internships (relevant to studies and/or during studies)
  • Intercultural experience (additional language skills, stays abroad etc.)
  • Additional activities during the studies (relevant to studies, charity work etc.)
  • Motivation and commitment (quality/care of application documents, letter of motivation, participation in Faculty Buddy Programme)

Students whose nationality is different to their prefered host university will be prioritised if necessary.

Language requirements

For the Erasmus+ application, official proof of the applicant's language skills must be submitted for English, French, Spanisch, Italian and Portuguese. The necessary level is specified in the Erasmus agreement with the respective partner university.
The language certificate must be submitted together with all other application documents!
(If you are using a language class taken at the university as your language certificate, please upload your transcript of records and highlight the relevant course.)

Information regarding the individual requirements for the partner universities can be found via Mobility Online. If two language are indicated for a place, (e.g. English C1, Finnish B2), a certificate for ONLY ONE LANGUAGE has to be submitted. It is, however, your responsibility to make sure that enough courses in this language are offered.

Proof of German skills only has to be submitted by students of the Master programme Economics.

  • PLEASE NOTE: Partner universities may have specific requirements regarding accepted language certificates. You may need a certain certificate (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL, ...) for the registration at your host university (after being nominated by us).
Please carefully research the particular language requirements of your desired host universities!

Detailed information on the language certificates accepted for the application at the University of Vienna can be found on the website of the central International Office.

Good to know - Language certificates for students of our faculty

Should you withdraw from your exchange stay without valid reasons or due to a lack of care with your preparations, the faculty reserves the right to suspend you from Erasmus+ applications for one yeaer.

Of course it is possible to withdraw from an Erasmus+ stay by giving valid reasons (financial, health-related, serious personal issues).

Please note: You are nominated for an Erasmus+ stay as soon as you have been informed about the allocation of the place via e-mail.

Good to know: Master's thesis during the Erasmus+ stay

Writing (part of) your MA thesis abroad:

  • Instead of attending courses, you can work on your thesis during your Erasmus+ stay. The subject and thesis supervisor (at the University of Vienna) must have already been approved at the time of applying
The topic of your thesis has to be handed in at the SSC and approved by the Director of Studies before your exchange stay. Please find more information here.
  • At your host university you will then have to do some research or write part of your thesis – the details of your tasks should be agreed upon with your supervisor in Vienna. If you want to be supervised as an incoming student at the host university, this is dealt with differently at different universities – please contact the International Office of the host university for further information.
  • Written confirmation from your supervisor (at the University of Vienna) after the stay suffices as proof of academic achievement. You are also entitled to complete courses at your host university, but it is not a requirement for receiving the Erasmus+ grant and is not regarded as a proof of academic achievement if you stipulated that your stay was in connection with your thesis.
  • Erasmus+ stays in connection with thesis work are only possible for one semester. However, if you want to apply for a spot for an academic year instead, you have to complete courses for the other semester.

PLEASE NOTE: Participants of the Non-EU Student Exchange Program may also work on their thesis abroad but they still have to collect the required ECTS by attending classes.

During the stay (course changes)

Course changes are possible and do occur due to the extensive lead times. It is very important that you inform us as soon as possible if you have to change some of your courses.

Please either fill in the form for course changes (Formular Kursänderungen)(or the Learning Agreement "during the mobility" and, together with detailed course descriptions, send it via E-Mail to the International Support.

As soon as the Director of Studies has reviewed and signed the document, you have the guarantee that the approved courses will be recognised after the end of your exchange stay.

Extension of stay

  • Please note: An extension is only possible if you are nominated for the winter semester!
If you are nominated for the summer semester, your exchange stay cannot be extended.

Please follow the necessary steps for the extension provided by the central International Office.

After the stay (course recognition)

Fill in the experience report no later than 2 months after the end of your stay and send it to international-wiwi@univie.ac.at - this helps other students enormously with their preparations for an exchange stay.

As soon as you have received your transcript of records from the host university, hand it in at the International Support, together with the filled-in last section of your Learning Agreement ("after the mobility").

The Director of Studies will sign the recognition of the courses completed abroad (provided they were approved of beforehand). As soon as you have collected your recognition document accepting the waiver of appeal, the grades can be entered into the system.

Finally, you have to submit a copy or scan of the recognition document (LA after the mobility) with the central International Office.

Student reports

Subsequently you can find the experience reports of previous Erasmus+ outgoing students.

These reports reflect personal impressions and do not necessarily represent the views of the International Support and our faculty.

The reports are meant to provide initial information to give a short overview on the host university and the context of the stay. Naturally, changes to the reported situations may occur.

We do not have reports for all our partner universities. Please help us complete our database by submitting your full report after the end of your exchange stay! Von manchen Partneruniversitäten haben wir leider keine Erfahrungsberichte.
