Programme outcomes

The PhD program in Business Analytics, Logistics and Operations Research prepares students for a scientific career in business analytics or operations research methods and/or in the application fields of production, logistics and supply chain management. The courses offered provide a sound methodological and content-related education at an international level, which enables graduates to independently perform research according to international standards using methods of business analytics or operations research and/or in the application fields of production, logistics and supply chain management.

Students in the PhD program are involved in the research-oriented and international environment of the faculty from the very beginning. They have the opportunity to come into contact with leading researchers who work at the faculty or who visit the faculty as visiting professors, and thus to get to know the current state of research in business analytics or operations research first-hand, especially in the fields of production, logistics and supply chain management, and to contribute to it even during their studies through their own publications.

Fields of activity

A PhD programme serves as a preparation for a career in research in the academic environment of a university, other research institutions or research departments of major companies. The sound methodological education provided by the PhD programme in Business Analytics, Logistics and Operations Research enables graduates to analyse and describe complex planning and scheduling problems in the fields of production, logistics and supply chain management. They are able to use modern academic methods to analyse and describe these problems and to develop methods for solving them.

Planning tasks include strategic decisions, such as location planning and network design, tactical decisions, the configuration of production systems, stocking policies and especially operative decisions such as sequencing and process control, and delivery and transport planning.

 Curriculum/Study plan

In the PhD Business Analytics, Logistics and Operations Management dissertation area, courses amounting to 30 ECTS must be completed according to the curriculum. The courses to be completed are specified in the dissertation agreements in accordance with this guideline.

The program is divided into a Core Program with 20 ECTS and an Elective Program with 10 ECTS.

Personal requirements

The PhD program in Business Analytics, Logistics and Operations Research is quantitatively oriented, and the courses of the program offer in-depth study in methods of business analytics and operations research.

Analytical thinking is therefore helpful in mastering the course program. A significant part of the PhD program consists of independent research, so the student's own motivation is an important factor for successful completion of the program. The interest in solving complex problems with quantitative methods of business analytics and operations research especially in the areas of production, logistics and supply chain management should be present.
